Teak plantation PT. Perum Perhutani
Teak is one of the most valuable and sought-after tropical woods on the market. Its exceptional resilience, durability, and pest resistance make it an ideal candidate for plantation cultivation. Under the right climatic conditions, the teak tree, scientifically known as "Tectona grandis," thrives with virtually no additional care. In the plantations, only regular harvesting is required to provide the remaining trees with sufficient light, space, and soil resources. In our production of high-quality garden furniture, we exclusively use teak from the state-owned teak plantation PT. Perum Perhutani on the Indonesian island of Java.

The story of PT. Perum Perhutani:
PT. Perum Perhutani is the oldest teak plantation in Indonesia, covering an impressive 2.5 million hectares. Owned by the Indonesian government, it consists of 1.8 million hectares of commercial forest and 700,000 hectares of protected forest. The plantation was originally established by the Dutch in the mid-19th century and became the property of the Indonesian state in 1949.

The difference in teak quality:
Due to high demand and the associated high prices, teak is also cultivated in other parts of the world. In recent decades, plantations have sprung up in countries such as Costa Rica, Panama, and Africa. However, these plantations are often operated purely for commercial reasons, harvesting the trees after about 30 years to maximize returns for investors. Unfortunately, this results in the harvested teak being less resilient, as it has not fully developed its characteristic properties, such as the retention of teak oils and rubber.
In contrast, the PT. Perum Perhutani plantation uses teak trees that are harvested only at approximately 50 to 80 years of age. The use of this very hard and durable wood guarantees the outstanding quality of our manufactured furniture. This clearly demonstrates that not all teak is the same – quality and durability are crucial.

The vision of PT. Perum Perhutani:
The management of PT. Perum Perhutani pursues the ambitious vision of becoming a global leader in the sustainable management of tropical forests. In collaboration with the Tropical Forest Trust and the soil association Woodmark, PT. Perum Perhutani has certified large portions of its plantations according to the strict standards of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
